About

    CARAVAN MANIFESTO FOR UGANDA
ADVOCACY FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE THROUGH A MASSIVE CARAVAN.
INTRODUCTION:
Climate change has arrived in Uganda long before 2020 and as its impacts intensify overtime, society and climate activists all around the world are aware of the growing intensity, but the worst of its effects are not here, although growing emissions push us that way. Millions of students and climate activists around the globe have joined hands together under one banner, leading the fight and advocating for climate justice as the framework to tackle climate change. In 2022, under the Glasgow Agreement, a global platform of grassroots and climate justice movements and associations in all continents, decentralized organizations of caravans in different countries will  affirm a new springtime of the peoples. In Uganda we will march through the valleys, mountains, escarpments in every region to directly connect with the communities stricken by climate crisis in many aspects: floods, droughts, forest fires, sea level rise, biodiversity collapse, water degradation and soil degradation. We will also point out the markers of this crisis, the big polluters and emitters that lead us to collapse. We will hit the road to cover 400Km from the western part of the country to the far eastern part of the country in two weeks time, addressing the main issues, talking to communities and exposing emitters and polluters.

Caution statement
It is not enough to talk about reducing plastic pollution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and the famous statements of net-zero emissions by 2050. We must make sure any response to the climate crisis is developed with solidarity, justice and equity.

We call for unity and solidarity.
There is no “safe zone”. Whether you’re in Europe, Asia, America or the African continent, climate change will impact us all, hitting societies and communities. We therefore need to stand in solidarity and unity while formulating different strategies that can help to tackle the climate crisis.

We call for a quick check
This one lies on how democracy functions and how priorities are dictated upon democracy. Climate change is an absolute emergency, and the later we respond, the worse it will become. We need to organize our own responses and not wait anymore. We must act now and demand justice from those who have caused this crisis. Devastating fossil fuel projects that further push us into collapse, like the EACOP crude oil pipeline crossing Uganda and Tanzania, must be stopped. Destructive multinationals that pollute our country must be faced, namely Coca-Cola, which uses us as a dumping site. Pollution from old and expensive vehicles must be combated, as we need public transport fueled by renewable energies.

We call for a transition that is just
It is normal to fear the unknown. However, we cannot afford to continue as if our house is not on fire. We need to make a fast and just transition for a better environment, stopping climate chaos and changing the status quo in the societies that have created this situation.

We call for climate justice to be served to tackle the climate crisis.
Those that are the least responsible for climate change are those that will suffer the heaviest consequences. We cannot solve the climate crisis by ignoring inequality and ecosystem rights. So let’s build global empathy together in this struggle for our future. Yes, we can. Let’s hit the road.
