Announcing `lx dist`: distribute your Lua projects as archives or standalone binaries
Published on July 8, 2026 by Marc Jakobi

Lux version 0.35.3 comes with two new commands for shipping Lua applications outside the package manager.

`lx dist flat-archive` -- distribute a complete dependency tree as a single `.zip`

Bundle your project and all its runtime dependencies into a portable archive.
No need for users to install Lux or set up dependency trees.

lx dist flat-archive

Supports multiple compression methods (deflate, zstd, xz, and more).

`lx dist bin` -- compile your Lua project into a standalone executable

Based on luastatic, but also works on Windows (MSVC).
Embeds Lua sources and runtime into a single static binary.
Users without Lua can run your application with zero setup. Linking native
C modules into the binary is supported on Linux only.
