Once you have decided on your college coursework, it is time to begin preparing for the various exams that will qualify you for entrance. Most colleges require students to take a core curriculum in science, math, English, and social sciences as a basic foundation. After this is complete, students must take courses in writing, history, and other academic subjects. As you complete your college courses, you will likely encounter tests specific to your major or courses you didn't take. These tests will determine which courses you need to take to meet your requirements for college.

Students who are undecided about whether or not to buy couse work to take first should consider their major. If a student has an obvious major preference, such as chemistry or English, taking the necessary courses ahead of time will make selecting a college major less daunting. Students with no definite majors in mind can also choose college courses in the minors that will help them better prepare for their first semester on campus. Taking liberal arts courses that allow you to become knowledgeable in various liberal arts fields will help you build a foundation of knowledge that you will need in college. Some of the more popular liberal arts courses that are often taken as prerequisites are English Literature, American Studies, and Psychology. Any college major, however, will require the student to take general education credits.

The college coursework requirements for students with majors in computer science, engineering, math, and physics vary from one school to the next. For students in majors such as computers, engineering, and math, the school will likely require that students complete an appropriate course in those areas. Depending on the program, these specific courses may be general education credits or specialized courses. If a student is not sure what course they should take, it would be a good idea to consult with a student counselor at the school.
