Open Recognition Community App (ORCA)

ORCA (Open Recognition Community App) is a project designed to provide individuals and communities with the means to create their own (interlinked) recognition ecosystems leading to the emergence of a Web of Trust (WoT). Starting from Open Badges, a well established and reliable "low tech" construct (a picture and its metadata), ORCA will demonstrate the potential of moving them from "disconnected digital credentials" to interconnected trust tokens or "Bits of Trust."

ORCA (Open Recognition Community App) is a project designed to provide communities with the means to create their own recognition ecosystems using Open Badges in a novel way.
One of the objectives of the ORCA is to demonstrate the power of a bitoftrust architecture using Open Badges as the digital token representing bitoftrusts.
The function of the bitoftrust is to establish a (symmetrical) trust relationship between two entities create a Web of Trust (WoT) to support in a trustworthy way the exchange and publication of information, publications, pictures, credentials and Open Badges. For example, a university might want to issue different types of credentials to students, so the first step would be to establish a bitoftrust with all the students and then assign those credentials to the bitoftrust. Or a community of professionals that has developed a particular expertise, recognises the people who are part of that community to then issue different badges to recognise specific competencies, aptitudes, achievements and commitments.
