About

We are affiliated with Rethinking Economics, an international network of students, academics and critical thinkers, campaigning to improve and reinvigorate economics in the classroom and beyond.

Our mission is to empower learners and build a diverse community of socially-engaged, young 'Rethinkers' who have the knowledge and skills to address the multi-dimensional challenges in our society.

Our initiatives are centered around 6 major themes:

1. Climate Change and the Environmental Crisis
2. Economics For Holistic Sustainability
3. The Landscape of Disruptive Innovation
4. Pluralist Economics
5. Diversity in the NZ Economics Circle
6. Career Insights

We host regular speaker series events (both online and in-person) and a Rethinker podcast to improve the accessibility of economics and explore alternative schools of economic thoughts. We'll launch our blog in the coming weeks to showcase writing and creative submissions related to our goals of diversification, accessibility and pluralism.

Our flagship Youth Education Project, which are being developed, aims to spark economics discussions by delivering symposium-style workshops led by teachers in schools (using the education materials provided) or by volunteer university students. We aim to provide students access to an interdisciplinary, pluralist introduction to economics and other relevant topics that may not be fostered or prioritised in their school (e.g. sustainability, regenerative system), as well as raising awareness of how economics relates to global challenges. We aim to influence these students to begin thinking about the ubiquity of economics, provoke their own considerations of potentially furthering their own interest in the field and empower them in the process.

Furthermore, we are currently reviewing the economics curriculum of NZ universities to build foundation for further research into its limitations, and how they might be reformed to better prepare future changemakers for the leading role they are going to play in society. Our current plan is to launch the report by the end of this year.

Our vision is to
1. Combat climate change by first addressing the lack of pluralism and the omission of alternative economics perspectives, such as ecological economics and related topics in sustainability,
2. Promote diversity and combat inequalities by empowering people from marginalized groups who are often underrepresented in the discipline and shape a new generation of economists who are open, engaged, and socially conscious,
3. Improve democracy by improving accessibility to economics education, which is often construed as abstract, technical and obscure, to help individuals make informed decisions in our society.
