December 2022 Update!
Published on January 15, 2023 by Victoria Jayne

Happy New Year, Fridge Friends! We hope you're enjoying an abundant 2023. We are thrilled to share with you that December of 2022 was a historic month for South Philadelphia Community Fridge! We strongly believe in "showing our work,'" and we hope that these updates have been illuminating in showing how your generous donations directly serve South Philadelphia.

In December, we raised $12,623.62 in funds, a new record for our organization. We spent $4,724.71. Of our expenditures, we spent $284.30 on expenses for our chicken distribution, $150.00 on handwarmers for neighbors during the cold snap, and $100 on transportation expenses. We spent $4,190.41 on groceries to feed our neighbors.

We held a chicken distribution on Sunday, December 11th at Mifflin Square Park in partnership with Alexander Tominsky, who went viral after eating 40 rotisserie chickens in 40 days in South Philly. Boston Market generously donated 250 rotisserie chicken meals to our neighbors. We were joined by the Philadelphia Health Department, distributing COVID tests and vaccine information, along with Unity Recovery's Harm Reduction team, which distributed Narcan, harm reduction supplies, and toiletries.

We counted a total of 128 tracked fridge fills in December - this number only includes numbers of fills completed by our volunteers. Community members also fill our fridges throughout the day!

People’s Kitchen: 24 Fills
Cleveland: 24 Fills
DiSilvestro: 23 Fills
BOK: 22 Fills
Point Breeze: 20 Fills
Mifflin: 15 Fills

We have an exciting list of goals for 2023- we're hoping to add a seventh location in the coming months. We're also working on a initiative to provide food resource materials in multiple languages spoken in South Philadelphia. We're hosting more events and spreading the word about South Philadelphia Community Fridge around South Philadelphia!

Thank you for being on this journey with us. We are a 100% volunteer organization, funded by our community. Neighbors make every single thing we do possible. We're looking forward to an abundant 2023 together!
