Set Apart’s Mission
Set Apart is an inclusive, empowering event created to inspire, equip and connect young people across Barking & Dagenham through a day of engaging talks, interactive guided workshops and meaningful networking. At its heart, Set Apart is about creating a platform for inspiration, reflection and connection, helping young people see new possibilities for themselves and their futures.
The mission is to offer an accessible space where young people can explore personal development, resilience and life lessons through shared experiences, peer to peer connection and mentorship.
The Set Apart Convention will bring together established speakers, skilled facilitators, and local youth voices in an uplifting, welcoming environment. The event will provide both practical tools for personal growth and opportunities for relationship building that can lead to further development pathways.

Set Apart's Principles
As a qualified mental health professional with over five years of experience working directly with young people, I am passionate about providing accessible and engaging mental health and developmental education and opportunity. Having also spent the past seven years supporting Barking & Dagenham communities through roles at Participatory City Foundation (participatory platform) and Mind (mental health charity), I am committed to creating opportunities that are rooted in the needs and lived experiences of Barking & Dagenham’s youth.
Creating Accessible Participation Opportunities
Accessibility is a core commitment of Set Apart. The event will be completely free to attend, located within Barking & Dagenham and designed to be welcoming for young people of all abilities and backgrounds.

I will ensure that the event content will be relatable and jargon-free, ensuring that young people of varying educational and literacy levels can fully engage.
Inclusivity
Set Apart is grounded in the belief that every young person belongs. I’m intentional about designing an inclusive space where all voices and experiences are valued. The event will welcome those from a wide range of cultural, social and varying backgrounds.

Speakers and facilitators will represent the diversity of the borough, ensuring young attendees see themselves reflected on stage. Promotion will ensure that we reach those who might not otherwise access similar opportunities.
Growth
The event is centred on personal and collective growth. Through talks, a hands-on workshop, and networking opportunities, attendees will be exposed to new ideas and practical tools for navigating life’s challenges and opportunities.

Speakers will share lived experiences and lessons in resilience, self-belief, and leadership. The interactive workshop will help attendees explore their own strengths and goals, while networking time will support relationship building and peer learning.
Aims of the Event
Upskilling and Development
Attendees will gain practical tools and insights to support their personal development journeys. Speakers will address themes such as resilience, emotional well-being, leadership, and self-empowerment.

Providing Opportunity for Further Development and Training
A core component of the event is networking and some signposting. There will be designated networking time where young people can connect with local organisations, potential mentors and each other. I hope that this will open pathways for ongoing development, whether through further programmes, peer groups or other available opportunities.
Inspiration and Growth Opportunity
The event is set to create a memorable, empowering experience for attendees. By engaging with inspiring speakers and connecting with like minded peers, the goal is that each young person walks away with both personal insight, renewed confidence and a new connection or opportunity to pursue beyond the event itself.

Alignment with the Legacy Asset Fund’s Values
The Set Apart Convention is strongly aligned with the values and intentions of the Legacy Asset Fund:
Action for Shared Challenges
Funding will enable me to secure a suitable venue that feels welcoming. The event will address the shared challenge of ensuring young people in the borough have access to quality experiences and development opportunities. Many face barriers to accessing such spaces and this free, local event is designed to meet that gap.

Future Development Pathway
Participation in the Set Apart Convention will serve as an entry point for continued personal development. Attendees will be invited to engage with the Set Apart 6-part programme, a structured series of workshops designed to deepen learning and growth around the event’s key themes of resilience, life skills, leadership and mental well-being.

Expense Requests & Approvals:
When
- In the first instance, payments for repairs to gifted assets will be approved as soon as the platform becomes available. Following that, they will be approved during the first week of each month, for expenses incurred during the previous month.
- Other expenses will be approved as soon as possible by a member of the administrator team.
- After the administrator team has approved claims, the Social Change Nest team will process these on their next working day- Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
What?
- As members of the collective, we are responsible for making sure submitted invoices remain in line with the proposals outlined in our respective Legacy Asset Applications, or following a majority poll from at least 2/3rds of the group if funds are requested for purposes outside of the proposals outlined in corresponding Legacy Asset applications.
- It would be helpful to the admin team if each invoice is identified with the asset & purpose associated as part of the description.
- Everyone will take individual responsibility for being aware of their own benefits implications when submitting an invoice and declare work appropriately for tax reasons.
- Invoices and receipts must clearly show the amount, date, provider name, legal address (or other identifier where a receipt) and what the payment is for.
- Expenses will only be paid if there is enough income to cover the expenses within the collective.
Contacting the Collective admin team:
If you have any questions or concerns about payments using the Open Collective platform, please contact the Collective admins within working hours (9-5, Monday to Friday).
