About

Founded in 2018, The Xylom is an Atlanta-based nonprofit newsroom seeking to understand three questions:
1. ”How can science look more like us?”
2. ”How are scientists shaped by what happens outside of the lab?”
3. ”How do people respond to the changing world through science?”

We do so through an award-winning collection of original personal essays, longform science features, and resources for early-career science professionals. We also send out a twice-monthly newsletter curating the best science stories in the American South and beyond. Our writers have gone on to win awards such as the National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science CommunicationsAAAS Mass Media Fellowships, and the National Association of Science Writers Diversity Reporting Grant.
Here's what our readers say about us:
A lot of you have asked me how I’ve been able to learn so much about "Cop City", it’s because of people like [...]  (Editor-in-Chief Alex Ip) [...] Give them a follow for really insightful coverage.
Rep. Ruwa Romman, the first Muslim woman to be elected to the Georgia State House of Representatives, on Twitter

...Tan creates a rich tapestry that connects science and history, localized personal memories and science of worldwide importance, effectively expanding both the reader's access to what is described and the reader's understanding of the much larger contexts they are exploring. Exquisite, sobering, accessible writing.
In the few months that I've become aware of the ["Cop City"] issue, your exceptionally detailed and factual reporting is the first time things have been put in perspective for me.
- Reader Albert Conway, in an email conversation with Editor-in-Chief Alex Ip
I was talking with my cofounder of 3484 earlier this week...we both fully agreed your journalism even as a student has been some of the best and most impactful in Atlanta, especially about "Cop City".
- Sam Baskin, Founder and former Creative Director of 3484 Magazine, Georgia Tech’s official student news magazine
