Celebrating a Year of Impact: Join Us in Reflecting on ABQ Free Fridge's Achievements and Future Plans!
Published on December 22, 2023 by Veve
This year, we distributed nearly $21,000 worth of food and supplies to the community. Thank you for being a member of ABQ Free Fridge and making this major accomplishment possible! Whether you’ve volunteered, donated, or spread the word, each action matters in solidarity with our community, ensuring folks have the food and resources they deserve to thrive.
Right now we have a unique opportunity to support ABQ Free Fridge by donating and receiving the Certain Days: Freedom for Political Prisoners Calendar. This calendar is required reading for radicals, leftists, and all who support political prisoners and advocate the end of mass incarceration. Each calendar has 12 thought-provoking essays and 12 pieces of beautiful art. You'll feel inspired every day of the year, with radical historical dates and lots of space for your own plans. You can donate to receive yours on our page.

After last year’s pause we were thrilled to restart the Free Fridge project on January 7th, 2023. We are incredibly thankful to Quirky Books for hosting us for the first seven months of the year! In this time we were able to regroup, gain volunteer support, and get to know our neighbors in a new location. We stocked a fridge, freezer, and pantry with groceries, hygiene products, and summer essentials including sunscreen and lip balm.
In hopes of reaching a wider net of people, we pivoted to best work with our community and distribute the supplies our housed and unhoused neighbors alike need in easy to access locations. In September, we officially moved to a direct distribution model and got to know our neighbors at Wilson Park in the International District. Every other Saturday, each distro brought more recurring shoppers and we adjusted to meet the needs of our community. At our last distribution, we distributed over 200 sandwiches, hundreds of snacks, fresh salads, hot coffee, protein drinks, hot hands hand warmers, toilet paper, menstrual products, and more– completely running out in just over an hour. We are thrilled to also be working with ABQ Heater Bloc this winter, who distribute their tent heaters at Wilson with us.
In 2024, we look forward to expanding our distributions and growing our volunteer base. Our neighbors have shared other potential distribution locations and we hope to distribute food and supplies every week to our community. If you are interested in volunteering to help pack or distribute, please get in touch! You can reach us at [email protected].
All in all, thank you for believing in the little fridge group that could! We are grateful for your support, solidarity, advocacy, and community building. If you are so inclined, please consider making a holiday donation to support our work or spread the word with family and friends.
