<div> </div><h3><strong><em>The Language &amp; Solidarity Exchange at Beyt Al-Adl:</em></strong></h3><div>Across the UK, refugees are facing increasing violence - hate crimes, protests outside their accommodation, and state hostility dressed up as policy.<br /><br /></div><div>The system is designed to silence them. <strong>Refugees aren’t allowed to attend college English classes until they’ve been here for six months</strong>, and even then, they’re expected to navigate legal systems, asylum interviews, and <strong>bureaucratic traps through broken translation</strong> and broken promises.<br /><br /></div><div>When language is denied, power is denied.</div><div>And when interpretation is outsourced to an underfunded system, truth gets lost.<br /><br /></div><div>That’s why we created the Language &amp; Solidarity Exchange - an <strong>open, grassroots project teaching English, Arabic, and legal literacy</strong> side by side.<br /><br /></div><div><em>The project is based in Beyt Al-Adl (the House of Justice) - our Muslim-led social space for healing, resistance, and community care. <br /></em>Beyt Al-Adl itself is a protected Muslim space, not open to the general public, but it’s the home from which this wider, collective work grows.<br /><br /></div><h3><strong><em>What We’re Doing:</em></strong></h3><div>Each week, we host <strong>English–Arabic exchange sessions open to all </strong>- refugees, migrants, and allies.<br /><br /></div><div><em>This isn’t a generic “language class”. </em></div><div><br />Each session includes:</div><ul><li>Language exchange - so refugees build confidence in English, and locals learn Arabic to bridge understanding.</li><li>Legal literacy workshops - teaching the basics of rights, asylum law, housing, and public services - so people can advocate for themselves without relying solely on interpreters or caseworkers.</li><li>A nourishing meal, cooked by or for refugees - a piece of home, and a moment of dignity.</li><li>Books and legal–language materials, to break dependence on state intermediaries and equip people with real tools.</li><li>Transport support, so no one is left out because of cost.</li><li>A safe, trauma-informed venue - Beyt Al-Adl - built and held by people with lived experience of displacement and systematic exclusion.</li></ul><div><br /></div><h3><strong>Why It Matters:</strong></h3><div>The state doesn’t just neglect refugees - it actively disempowers them.<br /><br /></div><div>By keeping people <strong>linguistically dependent and legally uninformed</strong>, it keeps them <strong>vulnerable</strong>.<br /><br /></div><div>Underfunded interpreters and chaotic bureaucracy leave refugees <strong>misunderstood, misrepresented, and powerless</strong> in crucial moments - asylum interviews, housing meetings, healthcare appointments.<br /><br /></div><div>Our work can flip that script, but only with your support.</div><div>We teach refugees how to speak for themselves: in English and in law.<br /><br /></div><h3><strong>This project is:</strong></h3><ul><li>Anti-fascist - building solidarity in the face of organised hate.</li><li>Anti-racist - rejecting the state’s hierarchy of who deserves safety and voice.</li><li>Liberatory - teaching people the language and law they need to live with dignity, not dependency.</li></ul><div><br /></div><div>We are culturally grounded, trauma-informed, and led by people who’ve lived through displacement, detention, and exclusion.<br /><br /></div><div>We’re not an NGO, not charity-branded, not state-approved.<br /><br /></div><div>We are a collective of refugees, migrants, and allies doing what the state refuses to do: equipping our people to survive and speak on their own terms.<br /><br /></div><h3><strong>Our Message:</strong></h3><div>This isn’t charity.<br /><br /></div><div>This is how we fight back: with language, law, and love.<br /><br /></div><div>Because when refugees understand their rights and can speak their truth, they’re no longer “grateful guests”.
