We are now hosted by the OCF!🎉

Kyle here one of the admins of the Open Collective for alaskan.social and a member of the modera ion team of the alaskan.social mastadon instance.
I wanted to provide an update on things happening here on our open collective page.
I'm happy to announce Alaskan.Social received confirmation this morning that our collective was accepted to be fiscally hosted by the Open Collective foundation. Joining many great instances there.
Some folks may have noticed that our donations and subscriptions options were only available for a couple of days and then disappeared from our open collective page. This is because in the first few days of self hosting we completely blasted through our short term funding goal and quickly approached an amount of money that seemed irresponsible to be hosting in my private bank account, without a separate legal entity or nonprofit status. We had already planned on switching to a fiscal host down the line but had wanted to be able to slowly allow people to be able to get familiarized with the system and allow us to be able to start directing some of our users to the donation page.
But since we had such an overwhelming response we had to quickly get everything in order to prepare for our fiscal hosting application. Which meant a temporary shut down of our donations and an emptying of our open collective account.
And while it took longer than expected we are now successfully accepted for fiscal hosting which means that for a small percentage fee the great folks at OCF have brought us under their umbrella of nonprofit status and that they will be dealing with the IRS reporting and auditing for us. Which gladly will make the admin of our finances all above board and much simpler. And make the alaskan.social instance as a whole that much more resilient so that our users and all Alaskans can trust us a home on the fediverse for the foreseeable future.
It also means that our donations will also now be tax deductible donations to a nonprofit so make sure to Hold onto those receipts come tax time 💸.
We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that as we transition to our fiscal host that those with recurring donations check their payment info
Thank you for supporting all the work here at Alaskan.Social
