Circular by Nature Report

Circularity exists in Aotearoa, New Zealand, but it has yet to be leveraged by decision-makers to improve everyday life.

The values exist. The research exists. The community practice exists. Business innovation exists. What has been missing is the picture of where it all leads, the translation into the language of decision-makers and the policy decisions that would turn existing momentum into a national system.

A vision that makes circularity real. Expertise and evidence has been drawn on to create a picture of what the circular economy looks like in practice, through the everyday lens of how we live, eat and move: the landscapes where farms generate their own energy amongst diverse foods, and by-products become ingredients. The street where repair is the easy option and buildings are made to be unmade. The transport corridor where batteries live twice and cargo bikes replace diesel vans. These are not aspirations. They are already operating in fragments across Aotearoa and at scale in other countries, assembled into a single vision so that a farmer, a manufacturer, a council officer, and a minister can all see what they are building toward and find their role in it.

The evidence is translated for decision-makers. This paper draws on a decade of New Zealand-specific research, case studies, and the practical knowledge of communities, businesses, and iwi across the motu, and translates it into the language of boardrooms, ministerial offices, and council chambers. It is written for the people who have not yet made circularity a priority, not for the practitioners who already understand the case.

The policy architecture to make it happen. Our opportunity is to shift circularity from a weakened, bolt-on approach to one that is built in: embedded in policy, legislation, and the way we plan for the future. That starts with restoring momentum, prioritisation, and coordinated actions across the system.

We have bought these together in the publication of Realising Aotearoa New Zealand's Full Potential - What will it take?
