About

Whakatipu Pōneke is a professional pilot programme designed for five rangatahi to lead grassroots environmental projects within the Māra Kai and Ngahere. This initiative treats the restoration and maintenance of our land as a high-stakes corporate project, giving participants direct experience in technical governance, financial oversight, and site management.

By taking on specific leadership roles, rangatahi move beyond traditional volunteering to manage real-world responsibilities. They are tasked with delivering measurable results, from ecological audits to communication strategies, all while ensuring the mahi remains sustainable and grounded in community values.

The project focuses on creating a tangible bridge between the classroom and the professional workforce. By the end of the 12-month cycle, these five leaders will have a verified work history and a professional portfolio. This ensures that as they leave school, they possess the confidence and the corporate literacy required to succeed in diverse career pathways or further education.
