Home is where you're welcome: Why the Day Center at Maleva 49, Kohtla-Järve, Ida-Virumaa, Estonia, became the heart of our project.

When we think of housing for seniors, we often imagine only square meters. But research by the European network AGE Platform Europe reminds us: a true home is a space of safety, inclusivity, and meaning. For the participants of the "Creativity Lab" project, the Day Center in Kohtla-Järve became that home.
More than just a building.
In Ida-Virumaa, where social connections are especially important, our project found its home at Maleva 49. This is more than just a "meeting space." For our participants, it is a "common home," where they come for the most scarce resource of our time—live interaction and cognitive health.
A synergy of volunteerism and city support.
The commitment of the Kohtla-Järve city authorities deserves special recognition. We often hear about bureaucratic obstacles, but in our case, we see an example of in-kind support, which is the foundation of the project:
- Accessible environment: The city has provided bright, well-equipped spaces.
- Technological advancement: Modern multimedia equipment allows us to conduct neurogymnastics and watch educational films on a large screen.
- Comfort and everyday life: The opportunity to organize tea after creative work makes the meetings truly homey.
Thanks to the city taking care of such "everyday" issues (rent, heating, infrastructure), we, as volunteers, can devote 100% of our time and energy exclusively to our participants—the elderly.
A small victory every Monday.
Even now, in the midst of the "gardening season," when every minute counts, our participants find time to come to this shared home. This is the best indicator that the environment we have created is inclusive and in demand. We don't just draw, sculpt, or play lotto; We are building a community where everyone feels needed.
We thank the Day Center's management and the city government for their trust. Kohtla-Järve is demonstrating that it can be a city where aging isn't isolation, but a new stage of creativity.
