In a groundbreaking step towards bridging the world of natural language and coding, Montreal-based developer William Bolduc has crafted a unique blend of Python and English, dubbed “Engli”.

The new language aims to democratize coding, making it an open field for anyone who knows basic English.

For years, Bolduc, Founder of Predict Expert AI, an established figure in the artificial intelligence field, recognized programming’s intimidating nature, especially to individuals without a technical background. With the invention of Engli, he has effectively addressed this issue, creating an intermediary language that takes English inputs and interprets them as Python code. “The ultimate goal is to enhance comprehension and accessibility,” said Bolduc.

Yet, it takes simplification a step further. For instance, a Engli user might input “Create a list of numbers from 1 to 10,” which the Engli system, using advanced natural language processing techniques, converts to Python code, numbers = list(range(1, 11)).

The accessibility element doesn’t just stop here. Engli users, explains Bolduc, can get an English description of any Python code. What used to be complex, jargon-filled code can now be given a natural language annotation — a significant benefit in rendering coding more intuitive.

Bolduc, though ecstatic with the progress, acknowledges the limitations of the system. “Efficiently translating Python constructs to English or vice versa is not always straightforward. There is complexity in idiomatic usage and the deep context-based understanding of both languages.”

Pushing those boundaries is where Bolduc anticipates Engli to grow. To this end, Bolduc announced the creation of the Engli 3000 dictionary, much like the Oxford 3000. The dictionary would serve as a lexicon to help aspiring coders understand and use Engli in their journey.

Moreover, integration with Predict Expert AI’s Octo Rocks Model and ever-increasing focus on artificial general intelligence (AGI) means Engli may soon represent a significant step forward towards AGI development.
