FLOSSK hosted a webinar titled “Inventory Management System” by Thomas Levine, focusing on practical approaches to organizing, tracking, and retrieving physical items in personal and shared environments.
The session took place on May 6 at 18:00 and explored the challenges of managing large amounts of tools, materials, and miscellaneous items commonly found in hackerspaces, workshops, or even personal backpacks. The speaker discussed how traditional approaches often rely on memory, which can become unreliable as the number of items increases.
To address this, Thomas Levine presented a custom inventory system based on labeling items with numbered stickers and storing their corresponding data in a database. This allows users to quickly locate items by querying their recorded identifiers instead of relying on memory. The system was designed to be simple, lightweight, and resilient, with minimal dependencies.
A key part of the presentation focused on the “sticker” software, which supports multiple interfaces, including command-line usage and paper-based workflows. This hybrid approach allows the system to function even without a computer, enabling updates to be written on paper and later synchronized, while lookups can also be performed using printed records.
The webinar highlighted the iterative development process behind the system, including design decisions, trade-offs between simplicity and usability, and alternative approaches considered during development. The discussion also touched on broader themes such as sustainability, consumption, privacy, and the hacker mindset.
Overall, the session provided participants with an unconventional perspective on inventory management and demonstrated how simple tools and creative workflows can solve complex organizational problems.
