Interpeer at Linux-Tage in Chemnitz
Published on March 21, 2023 by Jens Finkhaeuser

Hi all,

so, most of our updates are issued via the project blog.

But since our page here is a bit blank, let's give you an idea of what we're doing.

At the Linux-Tage in Chemnitz 2023, I (Jens) was talking about CAProck, a distributed authorization scheme we're developing. We're trying to bring this scheme to standardization in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the standards body that produces most internet related standards.

The talk was short, and we had a lively discussion afterwards that lasted until well after the recording stopped. It was a great event, and it's vital to see that our efforts generate interest!

But since this is a funding platform, let's break down what such an event means.

Pros:
  • Great feedback on our work.
  • A video to link to for people who want to see more.
  • Free admission and catering for the event.
Cons:
  • Getting up at 5am to reach the venue by 10am on the presentation day. The talk was in the afternoon, but this way I could make some limited use of the above perks. I skipped the previous day.
  • Driving around 425km each direction, so 850km total, for a fuel bill of around EUR 200.-. A train would have been cheaper, but also would have bumped each trip from around 4.5h to about 7h (14h total instead of 9h total).
  • Missing a Sunday with my family.
  • Staying awake for about 19h straight by mainlining caffeine.
  • Being exhausted all Monday.
Look, yes, those cons are not too terrible. I'd make the same choice again - not every weekend, but at least a few times a year. I enjoyed that day, even if it was tiring.

But what posting a video online just doesn't show is that there is a measurable cost attached to even the easy, good parts of running a project like Interpeer. That's far from unique to us, but a general problem in FOSS. But it also affects us.

So this update is to remind you that pitching in even with the tiniest amount is actually making a difference.

Thank you!
