Deprecating OpenCollective
Published on April 18, 2020 by Una

TL;DR: I'm deprecating this OpenCollective. Please migrate your donations to my self-hosted fosspay.

OpenCollective is a bad fit for Jortage; I'm the fiscal host, we're a small project, and we don't move a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. Setting up the monthly invoices to keep the OpenCollective money count in sync every month is tedious and somewhat stressful, and there's no accountability anyway because I am the fiscal host.

Ultimately, all OpenCollective does for us is make us waste 5% of our donations while providing a cumbersome site that's clearly designed for a different userbase. It doesn't even do charge aggregation like Patreon, so everyone is paying the full 2.9% + 30¢, and then the OpenCollective fee on top. Fosspay is still based on Stripe, so that base fee is still there, but there's obviously no OpenCollective fee.

Another benefit to fosspay is you can set whether or not you want me to earmark your donation for Jortage only. Right now, I'm treating all donations as earmarked, but I'd like to give the option to not earmark since there are other things I need money for. Fosspay also allows me to get rid of the current Square Cash/PayPal mess I have for one-time donations on my website.

For people seeing this in 2022 and beyond, there is no 5% platform fee anymore for "self hosted" independent collectives since 2020. Open Collective is now tip based. There is still a fee for Fiscal Hosts charging one.
