Announcement to meet.coop members 2025-10-31

Dear members and contributors,
We’d like to make you aware that some security vulnerabilities have been identified in the meet.coop infrastructure.
As a consequence of one of our partners having to withdraw from the project our Big Blue Button servers were no longer being actively maintained, and the underlying operating system updates and OS upgrades were not applied. The servers are therefore likely to have unpatched security vulnerabilities.
We are working to migrate all the servers to new hosts shortly, working in collaboration with three tech worker cooperatives:
We anticipate this work being completed by the end of November at the latest. While this work is underway the meet.coop Big Blue Button service will be unavailable.
Important steps for meet.coop users
Offsite backups have already been taken of this data, but we encourage all members to login and manually download recordings in the Big Blue Button interface to ensure an additional backup.
Please download any recordings you wish to keep before 0900 UTC on November 4th when the servers will be taken offline.
In the interim, we would like to offer you usage of a new Jitsi Meet video conferencing server (maintained by Autonomic): https://jitsi.meet.coop
There is no login for this server, and it is intended as a stopgap solution so our members can still meet securely whilst the migration work is underway. Please review the Jitsi Meet user-guide.
The action plan for this work is being developed openly in the meet.coop forum, so check back there for updates. We will send out a further update with more details of the migration in due course.
The cost of this work will be met from our accumulated reserves (currently around 14,500 GBP). As always, our finances are managed transparently using Open Collective.
The meet.coop Wordpress website, Nextcloud file storage and Discourse forum hosted by Web Architects have been maintained and are unaffected.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused by this work. As part of this work we are putting in place new maintenance arrangements which will enable us to avoid future issues of this nature.
