May 2023 Update from MAB
Published on June 8, 2023 by Jenna L
Hi there!
The sunshine’s out here and we hope you are enjoying yourself while soaking up all the vitamin D.
We were busy in May and we hope we got to see your beautiful face at least once. On May 9th, we hosted a New Member Meeting, an orientation where folks could come learn what we do and how they can plug into our work. We got to dream with folks for a whole hour about what mutual aid and abolition look like and how books by Black and Indigenous authors are a part of growing the world we want to see. If you missed that meeting and you’re interested in tapping into our work, feel free to DM or email us and we’ll let you know when our next new member orientation is.
On May 21st, we tabled at the Spring Mutual Aid Fair that happened at Cal Anderson Park. We were one of about 15 mutual aid groups that set up for a few hours; shout out to Stop the Sweeps, Black Star Farmers, and everyone else who was there too! We handed out three boxes of books, lots of zines, and a few posters. The day itself was a bit chilly, but we left feeling warm and care-full from all the beautiful humans (and doggos! so many cute doggos!) at the event.
On Saturday May 27th, we were invited to table at Que Calor! Mutual Aid Party, an event about heat stress prevention, labor rights, climate change, and farmworker justice hosted by Washmasks, SuperFamilia, South King County and Eastside Mutual Aid, and others. We brought about 4 boxes of books and gave them all out! It was a beautiful event (there was letter writing, t-shirt printing, skill sharing, and so much more!) and we had a blast. Big thanks to those groups for inviting us!
Did you miss us at The Station this month? We’re sorry we weren’t there (we were supporting our friends at Que Calor!), but we promise we’ll be back for June! Come find us Saturday June 24th from 1-3pm at The Station on Beacon Hill. If you have any book requests you’d like to see, please send us a message through our Insta (@mutualaidbooks) or email us at seamutualaidbooks (at) gmail.com.
As always, we deeply appreciate your solidarity. If you have any questions or feedback, send us an email!
In solidarity,
Alex and the rest of the MAB team
