2023 Year in Review Annual Update
Published on December 21, 2023 by Francis Li
This was a year of transition for our organization!
With the sun-setting of the Code for America Brigade Network, Code for San Francisco switched its fiscal sponsor to the Open Collective Foundation and is now called SF Civic Tech. During this transition, we continued to host our Weekly Virtual Civic Hack Nights on Zoom, supporting our all-volunteer project teams building civic technology for our communities in the city and county of San Francisco. Funds were spent to maintain our support tools subscriptions (Zoom, etc) and hosting infrastructure for our projects (AWS, Google Cloud, Heroku, etc).
Some highlights from our work this year include a new release of the Intentional Walk app for iOS and Android to support the San Francisco Department of Public Health's annual summer walking contest to encourage healthy living habits among low-income residents, the completion of MVP designs of new apps to support public education (Compass, Support SFUSD), and the kick-off of a new collaboration with the non-profit SF Life Line to build new digital tools to help bridge language barriers in emergency medicine.
Maintaining a sense of community and building strong relationships while meeting virtually is our greatest challenge in the new post-pandemic society, but we've been inspired by our volunteer project teams who organized their own informal in-person meetups to work on finding opportunities to host and plan in-person events in 2024.
Looking ahead to 2024, we're excited to complete our transition to becoming SF Civic Tech with refreshed branding and a new website, and to kick off new sponsorship outreach to recruit new volunteers and fund raise under our new name. Finally, we'll be looking forward to the launches of our new civic technology projects in development, the aforementioned Compass, Support SFUSD, and SF Life Line.
