A Whole New World
Published on March 27, 2026 by Evan Jacobs

A lot has changed in a year. In early 2025 I published Thank You, which officially put styled-components into "maintenance mode". All the things I said in that post are still true, but recent advances in AI have made it possible for me to experiment much more rapidly than before. As a result, I was able to put a functional RSC setup together in my very limited spare time and styled-components now has a path forward in modern React.

Fast forward to today, 6.4.0 RC7 is out (see styled-components@test) and the ecosystem remains large and growing, with well over 36M downloads per month. I feel much more optimistic about the long-term health of the ecosystem with tools like 4.x Opus from Anthropic at my disposal and whatever comes next.

Along these lines I have two requests:

Please help us test the RC! There are a huge number of improvements that should make heavy applications feel much faster, with more planned for the next major version.

If you use styled-components and you're profitable, please contribute back financially and help me keep this thing going—I'm the only remaining maintainer, despite asking for help from the community on several occasions.

I am happy to do this work, I enjoy it, but it's really hard for me to spend limited personal time on it. Funding this project means being able to pay myself more regularly so I can dedicate prime engineering time and focus. My goal is to get to $5k per month. That would allow me to dedicate about 25 hours of compensated engineering time per month to the full ecosystem and future roadmap.

Finally, I want to thank the community again for the continued enthusiasm around styled-components. I couldn't be more proud about what we've built together over the years!
