The Society for Game Cinematics 2023 END-OF-YEAR FOUNDERS’ UPDATE
Published on December 21, 2023 by Brian Horn

December 15, 2023

Dear SGC Community,

This was an incredible second year for the Society for Game Cinematics! Our community has continued to grow and we can’t wait to share our next plans with you all in 2024.

One of our biggest accomplishments this year was entering a fiscal sponsorship with the Open Collective Foundation, enabling us to expand on our plans, including the ability to now accept tax-deductible donations!

We are also proud to announce the first appointment of our SGC President, Kelsey Hess. Kelsey is a Virtual Production Producer at That’s No Moon, having previously worked on games with EA Respawn, Square Enix, Machine Games, and Supermassive Games, among others.

Here are the other accomplishments we’re celebrating since our formation in Summer 2022:
  • The SGC boasts an Initial Membership base of 2,361 on LinkedIn and over 800 on the Discord platform.
  • We’ve hosted several meetups and mixers: our official first meet-up/mixer at GDC 2023, SIGGRAPH, Gamescom, Santa Monica, CA and Dallas, TX.
  • We forged new relationships with organizations like: Animation Exchange, Animation Diversity Foundation, and the Visual Effects Society.
  • Organized live-streamed panels and Q&A sessions with incredibly talented and knowledgeable individuals from our community, including Goodbye Kansas, Blizzard Entertainment, and Glow Production.
  • Secured Fiscal Sponsorship and Tax-exempt Status.

To continue the great work that we have started this year, we realize that we can’t do it alone. This community can only exist if there is… well… a community. So what can you do to help?
  • Donate! We are officially able to accept tax-deductible donations on our Open Collective website at:  https://opencollective.com/thesgc  In 2024, look for more information regarding paid membership options and sponsorship opportunities!
  • Join in the conversation and engage on our Discord server! Throw a question out that you’ve been mulling over, add your two cents to a thread, meet and begin conversations with other professionals in the industry, take a look at the latest work or reels of your fellow members, and share some praise and/or constructive feedback. Each of our experiences are unique and that is how we will best learn from each other. Join us on Discord @TheSocietyforGameCinematics
  • Volunteer with us! Have some experience with event photography, graphic design, website optimization or event planning? In 2024, we will finally be ready to onboard volunteers for a variety of positions and responsibilities.
  • We would love to hear from you! Get in touch by emailing us at [email protected]

As 2023 quickly comes to a close, we want to thank you all for being a part of this very special group. As we set our sights on 2024, we look forward to meeting and sharing more of these experiences with you.

We wish you a joyous, safe, and wonderful holiday season!

Sincerely,

The Society for Game Cinematics Founders
