The Aashna Counselling & Psychotherapy Creative Team are delighted to invite you to a screening and short discussion on Friday 17 May 2024, 6 - 8 pm of documentary After The Apology as part of our combined celebration of International Women's Day and Care Experienced History Month.

On 13 February 2008, Australia’s prime minister Kevin Rudd issued a national apology to the stolen generations of Indigenous Australians who suffered forced removals from their families, as part of racist commonwealth, state and territory laws and policies in the middle of last century. It was a gesture recommended in the final report of a national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal children from their families.

The Grandmothers Against Removals documentary depicts the tireless advocacy of four Aboriginal grannies each challenging government policies to bring their grandkids home. Their grassroots actions spearhead a national conversation to curb the skyrocketing rates of child removal and reveal the racism in the state child protection systems across Australia. Illuminating the work of the Aboriginal community uncovering injustices and providing government with effective, deliberate strategies to correct the abuses perpetrated within the system of the stolen generations.

We will hold space for a brief discussion following the screening.

The £8 fee includes the cost of screening the film to support the film makers, snacks and soft drinks. Any remaining funds from Aashna events are donated to Aashna+ our social justice project offering accessible therapy to those who may otherwise struggle to access therapy.  Aashna+ is hosted by The Social Change Nest via Open Collective since April 2024.
