About
ABOUT US
Academics4 is an international initiative of scholars, researchers, and professionals working in the humanitarian field of Education in Emergencies. Emerging from the experience of ACADEMICS4GAZA, founded in January 2024 by Dr Fabio Carbone, ACADEMICS4 mobilises academic volunteers, educators, researchers, and professionals to support learners and educational institutions affected by conflict, crisis, displacement, and educational disruption.
The initiative aligns with international humanitarian standards (INEE, IEEE) and
is guided by the principles and commitments enshrined in:
• The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 26 – Right to Education);
• The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child;
• UNESCO's commitment to inclusive and equitable quality education for all;
• The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education;
• International frameworks relating to Education in Emergencies (EiE), lifelong learning, educational resilience, and sustainable development.
We recognise education as a fundamental human right and a key driver of resilience, recovery, peace-building, social cohesion, and sustainable development.
We further recognise that maintaining access to education during times of conflict and crisis requires not only academic continuity, but also the promotion of student wellbeing, emotional resilience, and meaningful social connection.

“DIGITAL BOOTS ON THE GROUND” – HOW WE WORK
Founded on January 2024 by Fabio Carbone, academic and humanitarian activist, and led by an international team of volunteers, Academics4 introduces an innovative approach in the field of Education in Emergencies through our “digital boots on the ground” model. This strategy allows us to maintain a real and continuous presence in crisis zones without being physically on site. It enables:
- Our tutors to operate remotely, providing education and support via digital platforms.
- A distributed network acting in real time, coordinating and responding to needs across multiple locations simultaneously.
- The delivery of educational, psychosocial, and informational support online, while maintaining a tangible and sustained impact for students and communities in crisis.
This model represents a pioneering way to combine technology, humanitarian principles, and academic expertise, ensuring that students in war-affected, post-conflict, or disaster-stricken areas can continue learning and accessing psychosocial support safely and effectively.
OUR ACTIVITIES
Academics4 operates through a range of complementary activities, including:
1. Group-based educational support, offering structured sessions that sustain learning continuity.
2. One-to-one tutoring, connecting international educators with individual students to provide personalized academic support.
3. Socio-psychological support initiatives, creating safe spaces for resilience, emotional wellbeing, and community-building.
4. Advocacy and awareness campaigns, raising global attention on the right to education in crisis zones and mobilizing solidarity.
