About

Ancient Woodlands UK is a youth-led campaign advocating for the legal protection of ancient woodlands and working to raise public awareness about their importance. We were launched in April 2023 after winning funding from the Woodland Trust’s Youth igniting innovation scheme. Our petition has over 1000 signatures and 6000 social media followers, using our platform to educate about the importance of ancient woodlands.
We’ve produced 2 adverts, 2 short films and attended 8 live events. We have 17 ambassadors, 7 of which volunteer at least once a week.

In June 2024, we held a cross-sector consultation to determine the contents of a bill for the legal protection/rights of ancient woodlands. Representatives included The Woodland Trust, Forestry Commission, UK Youth for Nature, and Lawyers for Nature. We are in regular communication with these stakeholders and others, including RSPB and Wildlife Countryside Link.

Our main aims for this campaign this year (2025) are to:
  • Engage the public through educational communications and in-person and online events
  • Draft our declaration of intent that will be produced to outline our formal position before working on a legal bill that will involve collaborative work with other stakeholders in the sector
  • Grow our volunteering team and create a sustainable and long-term plan for the organisation
