About
ASD Dads are Fathers with Autistic Children.
ASD Dads is a community-driven trust dedicated to serving the diverse needs of Māori and Pasifika parents, families, and communities residing in low socio-economic areas. We recognize the unique challenges faced by families with children with special needs, particularly within our cultural context. Our mission is to provide comprehensive support, advocacy, and education to empower Māori and Pasifika dads and their families on their journey with autism and other special needs.
Our Purpose:
- Creating a Supportive Community: ASD Dads aims to establish a support group led by Māori and Pasifika dads, providing a platform for advocacy and championing the rights and needs of their children with special needs, particularly autism.
- Empowerment through Navigation: We strive to empower Māori and Pasifika dads and their families to navigate the complex landscape of available support systems for children with special needs. We facilitate access to resources, funding, and services while advocating for change where challenges and barriers exist.
- Education and Informed Decision-Making: ASD Dads is committed to educating Māori and Pasifika communities, families, and parents, ensuring they have the knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions about their rights, entitlements, and available support for their children with special needs.
- Community Awareness and Inclusivity: Through community awareness workshops and information events, we create safe spaces that are responsive to the needs of Māori and Pasifika families with children with special needs. These events foster inclusivity, providing opportunities for networking and accessing the right support.
- Cultural Engagement and Respect: ASD Dads engages with Māori and Pasifika communities, families, and parents in a culturally sensitive manner, respecting their cultural identities, values, and protocols such as the Whare Tapa Wha or Fono Fale model.
- Free Autism Community Events: We actively hold free community events created specifically for our ASD kids and families. We hold free events such as Autistic Have A Go Day and various other events that are catered to our kids and ensures our families can be in a safe space where they wont be judged or have to continuously apologise for behaviour that may seem unacceptable in the public space.
At ASD Dads, we are dedicated to supporting Māori and Pasifika families with children with special needs, advocating for their rights, and empowering them to thrive within their communities.
