About

At its heart, AudioSpaces is a project about using technology to listen to the world around us. We have built a public, open platform for people to record, store, map, share and attend to sound in everyday life. You can participate in the project for free with our Android, iOS or web app.

Check out our website or see below for more detail on what we're doing.

WHO WE ARE

As of now, we’re a small team: three mates who are interested in sound and how it fits into the world. We started this project in 2023 coming from a few different perspectives, but we've always been grounded by the desire to 1) have fun and 2) do something useful & meaningful. We've never been driven by commercial incentives.

The main AudioSpaces features (recording, mapping, listening, gardening and curating) will always be free at the point of use. We will never sell your data. We don't run ads. We're not interested in engagement tricks or the "enshittification" model of Silicon Valley's social media platforms.

We do spend a lot of time on this, however, and as our ambitions grow we need a plan for sustainability.

To keep our platform free and operating according to our values, part of this includes support from those who believe in the project and who have the means – even if it’s just a few pounds per month. Any other source of funds we get we'll be transparent about, and any contribution will always be extremely appreciated!

WHAT WE DO

So far, we have a few different things freely available to the public:

1. AudioSpaces

  • For recording, listening and cartophony (mapping + sound).
  • Record any sound that resonates with you with one tap, or upload a recording you already have. Treat this as your personal archive, journal, sonic sketchbook, or a more concrete project – any sound is valid!
  • Pin your sound to the location you’re in, or one that makes sense for your sound. This creates an AudioSpace, which you can either keep private or share with the rest of us.
  • Explore the map, with thousands of sounds already shared across five continents.
  • Sounds are geolocated to real locations: as you move around the world, discover how other people have listened to the places you’re in. You can choose to restrict your AudioSpaces so they can only be listened to in full in their pinned locations. AudioSpaces is a tool for going outside and listening to the real world.

2. Collections

  • For curation, archiving and aural discovery.
  • Tag and browse recordings to explore what people have captured.
  • Organise your AudioSpaces or those of other users according to themes, locations, events or anything you like. Collections become their own maps within the larger map, which can be pinned anywhere you like to create a listening space.
  • We work with artists and creative projects to bring their work to life in dedicated collections.

3. Garden

  • Our in-built sequencer for playing and experimenting with new ways of listening.
  • Plant multiple AudioSpaces – your sonic “seeds” – into layers, either by hitting the randomise button or by browsing through the AudioSpaces archive.
  • Edit and sequence into loops with ease, drawing new connections between sounds as they resonate with one another.
  • Listen as your seeds grow into imaginative “gardens” which you can then share by pinning them back onto the AudioSpaces map.

4. Space Station

  • Our live radio stream, for simultaneous collective listening across the world.
  • Curate and schedule your own shows made up entirely of AudioSpaces, adding your own voiceover narration and reflecting in the chat.
  • Tune into a continuous stream of the AudioSpaces archive, as thousands of sounds weave together into unexpected sonic moments.

5. Writing

  • Through our newsletter on Substack, we send out regular updates about the project, our new features as we release them, and anything else we think might be useful to our participants. We’re keen to be as open and transparent as possible about where we’re going with the project.
  • We also use this as a space for reflection on all the contributions to the map, as well as more in-depth articles about sound, space and everything in between – by us or by talented, thoughtful guest writers. Subscribe for free to get these in your inbox!

WHAT'S NEXT?

As well as nourishing our existing features and activities, we're working hard behind the scenes to build on these foundations in various ways:

  • Working directly with communities and organisations we care about, offering our adaptable tools, our expertise and our creative minerals to carry out dedicated projects based on mapping, archiving and attending to sound.
  • Designing merch and tailored tools for listening that reach beyond the screen.
  • Collaborative research projects that build on AudioSpaces to explore listening, space and technology.
