About
BioAtlas is an open source toolkit for mapping the living Earth.
As storytelling beings, the places that are meaningful to us are central to our experience of being human. When we map our environments using arbitrary political borders we colour our lived experience with historical narratives of dominance, extraction, and competition.
To remedy this, we're combining the best parts of modern mapping technologies to provide an alternative planetary context, a natural context. We believe this will empower people to tell stories of cooperation, integration, and regeneration. We base our work on the following key principles:

To remedy this, we're combining the best parts of modern mapping technologies to provide an alternative planetary context, a natural context. We believe this will empower people to tell stories of cooperation, integration, and regeneration. We base our work on the following key principles:
- Bioregional Perspectives In every story of place there exists both a local and global context. For each community is part of a greater whole, held within the planetary context of Earth. Bioregions delineate the natural borders of the land and thus provide a balanced middle ground.
- Biodynamic Ecosystems We are inspired by the biodiversity of natural ecosystems and the uniqueness of each landscape. As living systems emerge and change over time, we're building complex adaptation into the foundations of our software.
- Biomimetic Designs Earth is our greatest teacher. Having gifted us copious design patterns, we strive to integrate the elements, universal models, and natural systems into our solutions. Whenever and wherever possible, we learn from and work with Earth.
- Deep Time Using relative time (now = zero) we're able to root our stories in the present moment, not anchored 2,000 years ago in on arbitrary timeline. Rooted in Deep Time, we're better able to see the path of history, observe current cycles, and envision alternative futures.
