Bitcoin Design Foundation in 2025

At the Bitcoin Design Foundation, our mission remains unchanged: to support people and initiatives that make bitcoin more accessible and user-friendly for everyone. A brief overview of our activities in 2024 include:
- Funding secured from multiple sources including Spiral, HRF, Chaincode Labs, and individuals
- Nine grants issued to individuals and efforts working on Bitcoin Design and UX research
- Established a board with three external members: Conor Okus, Basak Haznedaroglu, and Johns Beharry, who will serve in an advisory and governance capacity
- Several events organised and hosted during conferences, including BTC Prague and the Africa Bitcoin Conference
- Launching the Bitcoin Design Podcast, as well as guest appearances on a number of others
Now after a year of foundational work, we're excited to share our plans for 2025.
This year, we're focusing on three critical areas to drive meaningful impact in the bitcoin ecosystem:
1. Empowering Design Talent
Our grant program is at the heart of our mission. We're creating diverse pathways for designers and developers to contribute to bitcoin's usability:
- Supporting a core team dedicated to bitcoin design
- Partnering with projects to implement wallet improvements
- Continued design support and delivery of Bitcoin Core App UX
- Offering a flexible funding pool for innovative projects, designers and UX researchers, from specific micro grants to part and full time grants
- Global bootcamps to expand the talent pool
- Fellowship programs for those taking their next steps after bootcamps
2. Strategic Fundraising
We're actively building partnerships with organizations that share our vision of making bitcoin more user-friendly. Our funding strategy involves:
- Exploring new funding opportunities to expand our group of financial supporters
- Deepen our collaboration with mission-aligned partners
- Leveraging our network to support bitcoin design initiatives
Saying that, we are still a small organization with a just a few people doing this on top of our regular work, open source design and research. So as always, we are grateful for donations of any size to support the cause with donations to the foundation.
3. Operational Excellence
We're committed to building a robust organizational infrastructure that is as efficient as possible when it comes to deliver as much funding as possible for the ecosystem:
- Exploring optimal legal and fiscal structures
- Implementing a bitcoin-enabled treasury, supporting both donations and grants
- Establishing an operational budget, enabling the foundation to directly pay for initiatives
- Further improvements to transparency and governance
