Update on 3D Printed USB-A Magnetic Release Open Hardware Project
Published on September 14, 2023 by Melanie Allen
I'm submitting Reimbursement #161109 to cover expenses for hardware related to development of the 3D Printed BusKill USB-A Magnetic Release Version 3.
The purpose of this parts order is get different magnets and pogo pins that I believe will create a more effective Magnetic Release.
- * Magnets: Switching from disks to cube magnets allows for superior assembly, greater surface area connection, and improved use of space. 1/8" was the easiest dimension to find from a US supplier. A 3mm version of the file will be provided for an International version of the case.
- * Pogo pins: These pogo pins are shorter than the ones I got previously by 6mm, but otherwise identical. At the time I ordered the previous type of pogo pin, I didn't know these shorter pins were available. Shorter pins allow the case to decrease in length, reduce weight the force of the magnet must support, and reduce the area that can be accidentally knocked to cause unintentional release.
- This order acquires enough magnets and pogo pins for three prototypes to (1) maximize value for shipping (2) hedge in case of materials damage, and (3) allow for trying out different design options without always needing to destroy the previous prototype.
More information about the parts selected is available in the BOM and Vendor List files on the project repository.
In case you missed it, in my last update we announced a successful proof-of-concept.

Again, my deepest thanks to those who contributed to this project, who allow me to purchase the materials necessary for this work. I volunteer my time to this project because I believe it will help people. With your contributions, I can continue the development of open-source hardware kill cords that can be 3D-printed by anyone, anywhere in the world.
