About
Protecting mangroves by putting coastal women at the heart of conservation
The Red River Estuary in northern Vietnam contains an important landscape of mangrove forests, tidal flats and coastal creeks. Together, these ecosystems form a natural “green seawall”: they reduce wave energy and erosion, hold sediment, protect sea dikes and coastal communities, and support one of Vietnam’s most important agricultural regions.
The estuary is also a nursery and feeding ground for fish, crabs, shrimp, shellfish and migratory waterbirds. Thousands of local people—particularly women and elderly residents—depend on seasonal harvesting from its intertidal wetlands for food and income.
However, this natural protection is increasingly under pressure. Mangrove cutting, disturbance, unsustainable harvesting, coastal storms and shifting sediments can damage mangrove roots, young regeneration and important wildlife habitats. Conservation will not be sustainable unless local communities are directly involved and can benefit from protecting the ecosystem.
Our approach
Women for Mangroves brings conservation and community livelihoods together. Working with local communities, wetland managers and forest protection authorities, CCD will:
- Establish and strengthen a women-led community co-management team;
- Train community members to monitor mangrove health, biodiversity and emerging threats;
- Use simple GPS and photographic records to connect community observations with an effective “alert-to-action” response system;
- Support the protection and natural regeneration of mangroves in priority areas;
- Develop mangrove-friendly livelihood opportunities that reduce pressure on natural resources;
- Raise awareness among local communities, schools and other coastal stakeholders; and
- Document practical lessons that can be replicated in other coastal wetlands.
How your contribution will help
Donations will support community training, field monitoring, basic equipment, women’s participation, mangrove protection and restoration, livelihood development, environmental education, and transparent reporting of project results.
Every contribution—large or small—helps coastal women protect the mangroves on which their families depend. Together, we can build stronger mangrove forests, safer coastlines and more resilient communities in the Red River Estuary.
