CHAOSS Africa 2023 Highlights
Published on January 3, 2024 by Ruth Ikegah

1. What did you accomplish during 2023?

  • In 2023, our community members grew to 470 in numbers, both new and old open source contributors. We had over 1,600 followers on our social media platform, with 13 X educational spaces being held. We collaborated and sponsored two African Open Source in Togo and Angola providing them with funds and swags for their programs. We also built 2 open source projects; a website to showcase African Open Source projects using GitHub Copilot; and the DEI Project Badging, a project that awards badges to open source projects that showcase their DEI efforts.

  • Our Collective funds were used to maintain these community partnerships, projects, and also organize our community event, CHAOSScon Africa, which was held in June 2023. We printed out swags and compensated members for a job well done through contract-related programs that we manage, like All-in-Africa, GitHub Copilot, and DEI Project Badging.

2. What challenges did you face during 2023? What did your Collective learn? How did you change or grow?

  • We didn't encounter any challenges in 2023. It was a really good year for us in general, and we also received grants for different programs.

  • In 2023, we learned how to collectively bring people together to work on a project and compensate for their work.

3. What are your plans for 2024?

  • We look forward to creating more sustainable programs for our community members to contribute to open source and build projects. We'd like to organize more meetups in other African Countries.
