CoHo London East

COLLECTIVE

We're a co-housing community based in East London focused on building a community of 15-25 eco-homes

About

Welcome ....

We're a diverse collection of people ranging from early 20’s to 60’s in age, in income (2/3rds of the households in the group earn at or below Tower Hamlet’s average income) with occupations from nursing to community organisation, to student support and to architecture. We started in 2019 in Tower Hamlets and our vision is:

To create a co-housing community of 15 affordable homes, which support more sustainable ways of living through shared facilities occupied by a diverse and stable community with a shared commitment to actively contributing to the life and wellbeing of the local neighbourhood.

We are a constituted membership organisation and proud members of the UK Cohousing Network, and affiliates of Community Led Housing London.

What does co-housing mean to us?
To us, co-housing means striking a good balance between private and communal; we want to share resources, facilities and skills with each other and with our neighbours, while retaining the privacy that individually-owned homes afford.

Co-housing also means sustainability and thinking about the big picture; we wish to create a community that promotes symbiotic relationships between humans, plants and animals. And co-housing means fairness; we intend our future home to be based on treating everyone as equally integral to the group.

Aims
Three simple beliefs and goals have brought us together:

  • We believe the current housing market is broken, depriving many households of the security of a long-term home and making ownership of their own home an impossible dream. We aim to create a small scale example of the future of housing, which will nonetheless be a big reality to those who are part of it.
  • We believe the climate and ecological emergency means we need to urgently rethink how we design and build housing and live together to meet the challenges we face. We aim to be proactive in making the changes needed to even begin addressing the climate emergency.
  • We believe vibrant neighbourhoods come from active connected communities which need thoughtful nurturing to thrive. We aim to pioneer new ways of collaborative living in London, and be a part of creating the flourishing neighbourhood we dream of living in.

Where are we at?
In the last 2 years we have made steady progress developing our thinking, working together as a group and tackling the longest 'to do' list in the world in order to prepare a bid for our first site. We submitted a bid on a site in London in early Summer 2021 and are expecting a response in autumn 2021. In parallel we are actively searching for other sites.

Want to know more or get involved?
We're a membership organisation open to anyone who shares our vision for eco co-housing and our values and we run our decision making using the principles of sociocracy and consent.

If you'd like to find out more, feel free to email us [email protected].

We are not accepting new membership applications during the summer, but expect to re-open applications in the autumn. Just email us if you'd like us to tell you when.
