About

This workshop will give an overview of sociocracy, an integrated governance method that balances effectiveness and equivalence. We believe this is a crucial part of a regenerative organization.

Based on a living systems perspective, we understand organizations as nested systems that self-organize at all levels, individuals, teams, structures and outer socioecosystem. They are interdependent and promote a contribution to the systems they are a part of.

Sociocracy operates mainly at the structural level and offers answers to the two questions that any governance method needs to answer:
  1. Who decides what?
In sociocracy, decisions are distributed into in circles and roles. This workshop will show how decentralization can empower and connect people while creating clarity so decisions can be made faster, more easily, and by the people with expertise.
  2. How do we decide?
Sociocracy offers an effective and inclusive decision-making method, consent. Participants will hear and experience collaborative decision-making by consent. We will also cover what to say and do when someone objects, what a team can learn from an objection and how to learn and move forward.

The design principles and tools are both tried and tested and flexible can be tailored to many different contexts. Sociocracy is used in horizontal businesses, activism, coops, living communities and DAOs.

This workshop is going to be exciting for everyone who wants to learn how to self-organize for participation and outcomes, inclusion and transparency in a practical and doable way.

Nara Nishitani has been working as a facilitator, regenerative culture designer and self-management consultant for the past 9 years. She transitioned from a career in the IT industry where she worked for more than 15 years. Her work is based on the Regenerative Paradigm, organizations as living systems and Sociocracy. She’s also a member of Sociocracia Brasil, Sociocracy For All and Teal Brasil movement. She is eager to share her insights for us to cultivate even more regenerative organisations.

Ted Rau is a trainer, consultant, and co-founder of the non-profit movement support organization Sociocracy For All.
He grew up in Germany and studied linguistics before earning his Ph.D. in linguistics there in 2010. He moved to the USA and fulfilled a long-held wish to live in an intentional community where he still lives with his five children and 70 neighbors in a cohousing community in Massachusetts. Ted's perspective is influenced by being transgender, by his interest in Nonviolent Communication and Social Justice, by being part of a global sociocracy organization at work, and a parent at home.
