About

Movements are emerging more powerful than ever to further tino rangatiratanga, decolonisation, constitutional transformation, and Te Tiriti justice. At the same time, backlash is ramping up, and our online discourse presents ever more disinformation, abuse, and overwhelm. We believe that Tangata Tiriti have a role to play in anti-racism as haumi (allies) to Māori.

Tauiwi Tautoko trains tauiwi (non-Māori) to tautoko (support) by challenging anti-Māori racism, lifting some of the burden of dismantling racism in Aotearoa. Volunteers learn a set of strategies in the anti-racist toolkit proven to work when we want to ‘call in’ racist comments and gently challenge and change racist views.

"My understanding of racial issues has grown. My ability to work with the new way of communicating means I can do just that - communicate." previous TT participant

After hearing from those who've taken the course over the years, we're now offering two versions of the course, one for tauiwi pākehā and one for tauiwi of the global majority (BIPOC). Because while we are all connected in this work and form a broader community of Tangata Tiriti, our different experiences of racism mean differences for the learning and practice, and running two streams allows for conversations that couldn’t happen otherwise.

This Oct/Nov course is the tauiwi pākehā edition. If you are tauiwi of the global majority and are interested in this training, the course by and for tauiwi of colour will start in 2023 (email us if you’d like to be contacted when details for this course are confirmed).

October’s course will be shorter than previous trainings (7 weeks), and fully online. We focus on online racism for the course, as it’s a place tautoko is needed - and the difference of this group’s work is tangible - but it’s also a training ground for building skills and confidence for anti-racist conversations in our own offline spheres of influence.

The course opens with a half day hui on Sat 15 October and ends with a half day debrief hui on Sat 26 November. Between those dates, 6 weekly webinars are provided for ongoing learning and community support. These will be held online every Thursday evening starting on 20 October  from 7 to 8.30pm.
Please do not apply if you are not available for the opening hui and at least 5 of the 6 Thursday webinars.

Participants will have to be willing and able to contribute approximately 4 hours work per week to this course. This includes reviewing weekly resources, attending the weekly training webinars, and actively practising this approach online (About 28 hours over 7 weeks, plus 2 half day zui). You will also have to be comfortable with spending time online, specifically on Facebook for training purposes. A computer or tablet are advised to make the most of the resources and participation.

The program has limited capacity and is offered for a donation of your choice.  This will help us pay for the facilitation team, a ‘reflector’ role who gives weekly feedback on your online work, curriculum design, and much more. (As a reference, it costs $200pp to run this course for 100pp)

"I feel a lot more confident going into any sort of tricky conversation. I feel more trusting in myself and how I will navigate relationships." previous TT participant

We would love to have you join us, and be part of an ever-growing community who are working together to address the backlash to tino rangatiratanga and decolonisation. If you have not already done so, please take this short survey so we can learn a little about you before the course.

"I loved all of it! The learning was presented in a kind and generous way. Loved the groups in the zoom call. Loved the excitement of shared knowledge and learning. Very positive attitudes towards hard work." previous TT participant
