Concerts for Indigent Defense - Progress in 2023
Published on December 21, 2023 by Stephen Saloom

With the help of key supporters like you and local partners across the country, Concerts for Indigent Defense presented 14 events across 10 states on the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Gideon v. Wainwright, which established the constitutional right to counsel.   Your support enabled us to hire Gaby Shorr for the hourly project support- and recommendations - that fostered our success.

The challenges we always face are that we proceed with extremely little funding and while the shows and publicity they generate are all quite simple, the idea is new to most local defenders - who are extremely busy  - so helping them understand enough to even enable the connection with local musicians is far harder than one would imagine.   The support we provided (with your financial support) this year and NAPD's partnership for nationwide reach, helped us with that, yet we can see there's so much more potential to tap.

We are now exploring the viability of presenting Concerts for Indigent Defense again nationwide in 2024.   While last year's success laid an excellent foundation for the years ahead, this effort demands a significant time commitment that I simply might not be able to make without support this year.  (And even ginning up the support requires a commitment to acting on whatever comes in.)   So I'm exploring both and will let you all know if we're a go again this year.

Thoughts welcome as always - and thanks again for our success in 2023!
Best, Steve
