CryptPad usage doubling as people start working from home
Published on March 17, 2020 by Ludovic Dubost

Hi,

Yesterday, we had the highest day of usage of the cryptpad.fr instance ever, with more than the double activity compared to the highest previous days. Obviously this is due to a massive amount of people switching to remote work with the propagation of the COVID-19 pandemic. CryptPad.fr usage has particularly grown in Germany, France, and Italy. Below is the hourly pad activity of CryptPad.fr

At this point we are handling the load, but we expected that it would take one year for usage to double and we have less margin now and we believe we have to start some more scalability work. We encourage anybody to run their own instances of CryptPad (see https://github.com/xwiki-labs/cryptpad/wiki/Installation-guide for installations instructions).

We are glad to be able to provide a privacy respecting alternative to other online tools as more users will rely on cloud platforms. So many companies are unprepared for remote work and will have to find tools quickly. More personal and private data will be exposed as unsecure tools will be used.

We are considering temporarily raising the CryptPad.fr free usage limit from 50Mb to 1Gb to provide more free service to users in need. However we are holding off on this to study what it means for the scalability and the quality of service of CryptPad.fr.

We would like to thank our backers on OpenCollective, our subscribers, and Europe's NGI initiative who fund the work on CryptPad and the CryptPad.fr instance. We have already made a lot of progress on CryptPad in the last year and we will continue to do all we can to provide the best Open Source tool for collaboration and a great CryptPad.fr service.

This help is very important!

Ludovic, for the CryptPad team
