About

Deternet Groningen

As a local interconnected hub, Deternet Groningen is part of the global Deternet initiative. The aim of Deternet Groningen, like any other hub, is to implement the project's objectives at the local level, specifically within the Groningen region of the Netherlands. This page provides a brief introduction to Deternet Groningen, outlining its functions and ways to contribute; however, for further information, please visit our hub's website. Finally, for those interested in understanding the exact composition of our region, a map is available for reference.

Hub (Collective)

Deternet Groningen is the first official hub of the Deternet project started in Februari 2026. Our hub is located inside a community building who itself is a non-profit as well. It goes under the name of Trav12 and it functions as a community building that serves both residents and creative businesses. It is full of artists, tinkerers, musicians and culture and on top of that we are allowed to shape the building as we please.

Projects

Our hub as any other hub works with a project system such that each project has their own dedicated funding page to gather the resources necessary for joining Deternet. Most often projects stay independent from each other but it could happen that one project gets merged with another if they turn out to be closely related in the future. In summary, a projects funding page has the following goals

  • Description: A short description of the project's aim in the short and long term.
  • Collecting Resources: A list of all the hardware that is expected to be necessary for the project and what hurdles need to be overcome, such as permits. This list of hardware is determined by a group of volunteers that have scouted the project on beforehand. After scouting they make a design and come up with a rough estimate on what the cost will be if no hardware is donated. That number will be set as a goal that needs to be achieved for the project to start.
  • Community Motivation: The great thing about a public funding page is that all the people involved in it can see who is contributing and how much still needs to be raised to reach its goal. People from the neighborhood could also get involved by promoting the project themselves.
  • Hardware resources: Next to financial contributions also hardware could be directly donated according to the list of hardware provided on the funding page. If you do have hardware then please go to the project's page website. There you will find a button to submit your hardware and a volunteer will get in touch with you as soon as possible.
  • Matrix channel: A dedicated Matrix channel is created for all communication regarding the specific project. This group will be a combination of volunteers that execute the project and the people that are involved in the project. The channel will be archived once the project has finished. Any questions after the project will be requested to send to the general customer service department of our hub.

Donation Policy

  • We don't accept donations from any proprietary centralized tech corporation nor governmental institutions. This is to make sure to keep the original spirit of open source, which emphasizes freedom and community-driven development. Finally, government involvement could lead to increased regulation and control over open source projects.
  • Individuals buy their own hardware. We don't use funds to sponsor people with private hardware, we only provide them with our time and knowledge. All funds go to public infrastructure investments that multiple people/regions make use of.
  • Unfortunately, there does not exist an open source alternative for money transfer at this moment, because well it involves money ;) The closed centralized projects we use at this moment are Stripe for Credit Card payments, SEPA for bank transfers and PayPal for digital payments. In the future we also hope that OpenCollective will implement iDeal(Wero) for the Dutch market.
