What a year for Gin
Published on December 22, 2021 by Sascha Eggenberger

Dear lovely sponsors,

What a year for Gin! The usage almost quadrupled in 2021! A lot of underlying fixes were made and with the now merged facelift Gin also got a visual overhaul. Without your support this wouldn't been possible at all. I worked way more on Gin as I thought. So a big thank you for supporting my work – there is a lot more to come in 2022!

Here are some highlights of what has been done this year:

Facelift
The facelift is now merged into 8.x-3.x-dev. It includes a more refined design which is an evolution to the previous design.

Refactored code
As Gin grew in size and features it was now the right time to do some things properly. So I refactored a lot of Gin's code in recent months. This leads to a more solid foundation for future functions. On top of that I was able to remove over 180KB of CSS code (!) with the introduction of the facelift. We now also have component based CSS/JS which means that we only load the parts of the code which is needed if features/modules are installed and used on the page you're viewing – which drastically reduces the payload.

Auto Darkmode
Darkmode has gone a step futher with the introduction of «Auto Darkmode». When you enable this new feature Gin will automatically switch between Light- and Darkmode following your system settings. Custom accent colors will automatically get a optimised shade to match Darkmode.

Secondary toolbar in frontend
A long missing piece is now finally integrated. The secondary toolbar is now also available in the frontend theme.

Bug fixes
A lot of bugs have been fixed in 2021. With the growing use of Gin also more bugs are being reported – which is a good thing!

Drupal 10
Gin has already been made compatible with Drupal 10 - we are ready for the future.

One more thing
With only one feature left, Beta 1 is just around the corner and is scheduled to launch early 2022! Yay!

Thank you again for your support and I hope you will continue to do so in 2022!

Happy holidays and a happy new year,
Sascha
