Why is FLOWLab a nonprofit ? (Didn't you rail against the nonprofit industrial complex?)
Published on January 8, 2022 by Emily Weltman

Why did you decide to go this route? (Didn't you rail against the nonprofit industrial complex?)

Yes, and we still believe if wealth was distributed equitably, we would not have to go this route. To continue to support this community (while we work to shift power and $ to the people), we needed a sustainable interim solution and ecosystem to better serve EVERY founder, even the ones who could not afford us. We need a multi-org approach to tackle the complex systems of oppression put in place to prevent organizations like ours from thriving, or even surviving.

We don't want SBA Loans or VC investors. White men don't have debt capital and if they do it doesn't follow them forever. They just get more money; we get bankruptcy.

Many alternative business explorers, researchers, and founders discover there is no one and done solution to creating equitable businesses. We were relieved to find others come to the same ecosystem conclusion. We are not alone! No one entity or structure will dismantle the current complex economic model and power structure we know as capitalism.

FLOWLab is now a 501c3 thanks to our new fiscal host Open Collective Foundation.
Thanks to their research and figure out ways to fast track people getting to the work, we do not have to do all the admin work of running a nonprofit  (990s, Taxes, and Formation, Annual Reports, and a Board of Directors...we will probably do the last 2 anyway).

This also enables us to do several things. First, if we raise funds, we can continue to support underfunded and underestimated creators, consultants, entrepreneurs, and founders with low/pro bono brand and biz dev services. Plus we can...
  • Grow a more formal community hub to share resources, teach social enterprise, biz dev, design, and creativ e ops workshops.
  • Grow our network and hold space for those who are burnt out, frustrated, stuck, or ready to quit.
  • Raise money for our content creation, research, and newsletter THE HOT LIST.
  • Apply for grants (small businesses and STEAM) for underrepresented experts.
  • Support the costs associated with completing our B Corp research and Coop research so we can share that with all of you!
  • Pay writers and Creators!
  • Pay teachers and roll out our content and research libraries.
We are excited to get moving on the above, and appreciate any contributions to facilitate our work. Sponsors and monthly supporters welcome!
