Our Statement about the Situation in Slovakia
Published on September 29, 2025 by YukiDeer
We join others in strongly condemning the constitutional amendment passed by the Slovak Parliament on Friday, 26 September, which restricts legal gender recognition to a binary framework of ‘male’ and ‘female’ only.
We have no words to comment to such actions. This move is a continuation of a series of measures taken by the Slovak government to dismantle the rights of trans people, following several failed attempts to ban legal gender recognition.
Not only has Slovak government attacked Ukrainian people, it now attacks queer people too. They remind us of Russia's and Hungary's anti-LGBTQIA+ measures, befitting only dictators, as these steps logically aim to dismantle the rights of all LGBTQIA+ via proxy.
It might get worse, but we would stand in solidarity for as long as it takes. Nonetheless, FUR/HELP and other nonprofits joining us in protest, have a clear answer to such actions of the Slovak Government. We hope that the European Union, the United Nations and other international organizations would not only condemn such open discrimination, but act rashly to combat it.
For all the Slovak LGBTQIA+ people and associations, we stand strong with you in support, and we would stand there forever. We wish luck to the protestors, freedom to the Slovak LGBTQIA+ people, and finally equal rights and safe life for each LGBTQIA+ person in Slovakia as well as all the world.
FUR/HELP stands with Slovak LGBTQIA+ and Ukrainian people in Slovakia.
