⚠️ Our Statement Regarding the U.S. Safe Country Status
Published on March 1, 2025 by Yuki-Julien "YukiDeer" Golovin

In light of the alarming rise in state-backed persecution of queer and trans in the United States, we join with other nonprofits to request that the EU and Canada reconsider the classification of the U.S. as a "safe country." Recent fallback in protections and policies for the rights and freedoms of LGBTQIA people have created a perfect environment of fear and discrimination, undermining the very principles of human rights and dignity.

By excluding the U.S. from the safe country lists, at least for LGBTQIA people, we send a powerful message that the protection of marginalized communities is crucial. It is also crucial for nations that champion equality and justice to stand in solidarity with those facing persecution. We must prioritize the safety and well-being of LGBTQIA individuals everywhere, ensuring they have access to refuge and support in times of need.

FUR/HELP remains determined to continue its services and support for American Trans people in danger, advocating for LGBTQIA people worldwide, and providing much needed amplification to those in danger and need.

UPD: As of 2021, the following EU Member States consider the United States "a safe country of origin": Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Malta, Netherlands and Slovakia.
