Gratuities for trash collection.
Published on July 19, 2023 by Germantown Fridge

Hello friends and supporters,

For the last several years, we have been relying on several kind folks to collect trash and recycling at each of our sites. Anyone who visits our fridges, knows that it's a huge, messy job that requires attention every single day.

There are currently five people who take care of trash at our High st location and three people who do it at Armat st. They do so free of charge on a daily basis.

At High st, they're required to empty two 50 gallon trash bins, break down and remove dozens of cardboard boxes, then take it all to the dump in their own vehicle.

At Armat st, folks have to empty one 50 gallon trash bin (plus any dumped trash), break down and dispose of dozens of cardboard boxes, then take this waste to the dumpster behind the GSFS building (our Armat st fridge host). In addition, once a week, the sidewalk in front of the fridge gets power washed.

We are extremely grateful to these individuals for helping us with these tasks. It's hard labor, and frankly, it's stinky labor but they never complain or ask for anything in return.

To express our eternal gratitude for their help, we have decided to institute a semi-annual tipping policy. Twice a year, we would like to give $50 to each person who is helping us keep the areas around our fridges clean, tidy and trash-free for our neighbors.

The first such expense has just been submitted to our account; with the next slated to happen during the Holidays in December.

Thank you all so much for continuing to support our mission with your generous contributions. We can't do this without your help <3

Dealing with trash is such important work, yet so undervalued.
