The irregular scheduled Update post
Published on September 29, 2022 by maloki

Hello everyone! We're very proud to announce the release of GoToSocial v0.5.0 Sonorous Sloth. This is the sixteenth alpha release of GoToSocial! We got an extra message for you at the bottom of this post!

Some highlights:
  • Custom emojis are now supported! You can upload custom emojis via the /api/v1/admin/custom_emojis endpoint. See https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/api/swagger/. By default, the size limit for emojis is 50kb to conform with Mastodon, but this can be changed in the config. In future, you will be able to upload / remove/ update custom emojis via the admin panel, but for now you must do it via the API.
  • OpenGraph meta tag support! When you link to a GoToSocial status or profile, it will properly serve preview information.
  • Custom CSS is now supported for user profiles and statuses. If your instance has accounts-allow-custom-css set to true, you can set custom css for your profile and statuses through the user panel – see https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/user_guide/custom_css/
  • GtS can now deliver messages to shared inboxes. This has significant performance improvements when you’re followed by lots of accounts from a single instance with shared inbox support (Mastodon, Misskey, etc).
  • Avatars of unknown accounts are now shown as cute little GtS sloths in client applications.
  • Rate limit middleware!
  • Loads of bug fixes.
  • And more!

Welcome to the inaugural GoToSocial newsletter! We're gonna try writing these with the more major updates. And what's major will keep changing as the development goes further. Right now, the 0.5.0 is major, as we're in Alpha. We'll see how we adjust it later.

The idea is to keep people up to date on what's been going on at the SuperSeriousBusiness volcano headquarters, where we poke and prod at GoToSocial code. Maybe we'll even post the newsletters on time, wouldn't that be something! [narrator: They didn't post the newsletter on time at all...]

We want to balance giving you info and staying within our energy means, which made us realize we could combine something we already do regularly with adding some additional info here on the Open Collective!

You can still follow for all the minor release updates and other shorter thoughts and posts on the official GoToSocial account on Superseriousbusiness.

ps. since we wrote this post, there's been a small update and we're at 0.5.1 ds.
