SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT: Konni Deppe - An Northern (Orchard) Town in The South
Published on January 2, 2025 by Dan Hasler - Manchester Fruit Tree Coop

SPEAKER: Konni Deppe
TITLE: A Northern (Orchard) Town ... in The South.
SPEAKER PROFILE:
After burnout in an office job, Konni Deppe is now a community gardener living in Luton, Bedfordshire. She’s been running volunteer gardening sessions in a challenging urban environment since 2020, growing food on street corners and under-used green spaces. A childhood in rural Germany as the daughter of conservation enthusiasts sowed the seed that grew into the Luton Orchards project. Konni graduated with a Certificate in Community Orcharding in 2024. She’s now a trustee of the East of England Apples and Orchards Project.

TALK OUTLINE::
“Find out what you’ve had in the past and what you’ve lost”. Those words led community gardener Konni Deppe to unearth the history of orchards in Luton, a town more famous for its airport, car plant and hats. Konni will share how she went about it, and reveal the surprising results from maps, old newspapers, archives and people’s memories. Has she helped Lutonians fall back in love with their fruit trees?
