Stocking up on seltzer in early August
Published on August 3, 2023 by Iffy Books

The photo above is enough seltzer and toner to last a couple weeks, made possible by y'all.

It's been a busy summer at Iffy Books! Here are some highlights from July:

• We had a 2nd birthday party for the shop, complete with cake and decorations.

• We hosted our first open zine printing session, providing free printing for zine makers.

• We taught a new workshop called Python Data Visualization for Beginners, which went well! You'll see it on the calendar again soon.

• At Router Hack Day III we taught folks how to install open firmware on the routers we've been learning about for the past six months. Congrats to Retry and Jim for completing the challenge! You can find step-by-step instructions here.

• We ran our Meshtastic 101 workshop twice, showing people how to send encrypted text messages over the air with LoRa radios. We also hosted two virtual Meshtastic meetups, helping people in the PHL area connect to the network. Here's our latest zine on the topic.

• The Model Internet Club met again to work on building an offline network with local websites and resources. Our next meeting is Saturday, August 5th, 1–5 p.m.

• The Neo-Luddite Reading Group has been going through Dan McQuillan's Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence one chapter at a time. The next two meetings are 8/8 and 8/22

• The Speculative Futures Reading Group met to discuss The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin in July. Next up is The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin on August 30th

• Last Friday we hosted a hack night for the Philly JS Club. We're still working out the schedule, but our current plan is to host it once a month.

🗓 This week we're kicking off August with First Friday and the Philly 2600 meetup on Friday, 8/4 from 6–9 p.m. Hope to see you there!

🖼 We're sending postcards to supporters in a couple weeks, designed and printed by the artist Dre Grigoropol. To get one in the mail, you may want to check whether you have an address on file. (Or stop by and pick it up in the store.)

❤️ Thanks for helping make all these events happen! We couldn't do it without you.
