Support Heads: The Future of trustworthy and auditable hardware and firmware
Published on December 13, 2023 by Thierry Laurion

Hi there, dear past PrivacyBeast customers/Heads enthusiasts!

Thank you for choosing PrivacyBeast in the past and for trusting Heads with your trustworthiness needs.

PrivacyBeast and Heads are more than just products. They are part of a vision to make the world a safer and more respectful place for everyone. Here are some of the features and benefits that make them unique and valuable:

- PrivacyBeast was the first certified QubesOS second hand/refurbished device that used coreboot+linux as a trustable bootloader, ensuring that your firmware and pre-boot environment are trustworthy and secure. You could build it yourself but trusted us to flash your device, preinstall QubesOS and make the shipment anti-interdiction proof for the first time in the world history, you were the first to re-owned all the security components prior of using your laptop for the first time. You never had to worry about the state your computer was in since the last time you turned it off. The PrivacyBeast was a proof of concept to be replicated at home and by others and was successful, funded my work on Heads for a while until other QubesOS certified hardware made their way and grant work began to be paid. The proof was made and replicated.

- Heads is a free and open source project that enables you to flash and upgrade your own supported device, giving you full control over your computer, its firmware, related security components and associated key material, making you the sole owner of your computing device. You can also customize Heads to suit your preferences and needs, and contribute back what worked for you for review prior to being merged upstream.

- Heads is also used/forked by other companies product lines that use coreboot, such as Nitrokey(Heads), HardenedVault(HardenedBoot), Purism(Pureboot), and NovaCustom(Heads) and has established partnerships with them to share funds and/or code. This creates a strong and diverse community of developers and users who support each other to improve the whole ecosystem.

But maintaining and developing such a project is not easy. It takes time, effort, and resources from dedicated people who care about ownership, trustworthiness, privacy and security. And that's where you come in.

If you love Heads and want to see it grow and improve, please consider donating today. Monthly donations are preferred, as they help us plan ahead and budget our expenses. You can donate through Sponsor button under https://github.com/linuxboot/heads.

We prefer OpenCollective because it gives you and the world a clear view of who gets paid how much and for what, just like grant projects work after merging reviewed proof of work in open source projects. This way, you can see how your donations make a difference and how we use them to make the whole ecosystem better.

Unfortunately, neither Opencollective, Github Sponsor accept crypto donations at the moment, due to the legal and accounting challenges in Canada/planet earth, resulting in crypto exchanges blockages and shutdown. But we are open into finding a solution that works for you, them and finally us. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how to make crypto donations possible through OpenCollective(again) or GitHub sponsor, please let them know. That would help everyone.

Your support means a lot to us and to the future of privacy and security. Thank you for your time and hopefully your financial support.
