October 2022 Update
Published on October 30, 2022 by Tom
Hiya!
In a time of total chaos, mutual aid groups feel more important than ever: a way to build a different kind of society together, where people look out for each other, and find ways together to challenge inequality. Lambeth Mutual Aid is such a small group, it sometimes feels impossible to do anything deep, especially when we’re also trying to work, be involved in unions, and juggle caring duties. We’re always hoping more people will get involved, so if you’re reading this, please get in touch – you’re already involved a bit, so why not join in more?!
We have some important news to share for the months ahead:
October: the fund will reopen on Friday 28 October at 4pm. The solidarity fund is low, and if everyone received £50 there would be enough for only 11 people. So if you’ve had money from the fund recently, or think you could manage with less than £50 this month, please consider not applying, or applying for less, so more people can be supported.
November: because the solidarity fund is so low, we’re going to try out a couple of new approaches. Each person can apply for a £50 grant once every two months, instead of once a month. And only one person per household can apply each month. We hope this will mean more people can access the fund.
December: we want to talk with everyone who’s had money from the fund about how we’ve been sharing the money since June, and what we could do differently. We also know there are other ways to support each other, sharing knowledge and different ideas. So: let’s have a tea party! We’re going to organise a venue, childcare and snacks, and we would love you to come and get involved in the chat. We think this might happen on Saturday 10 December, but we’ll share more information soon.

That’s all our news! For anyone in Brixton, we also want to let you know about an event called Money, Community & Me organised by Brixton Mint: it’s happening on 19 November at the Baytree Centre and is a space for people to share advice on dealing with the costs of living crisis.
Lastly, we always tell people about the brilliant work Lambeth Larder are doing, they also have a monthly newsletter where they announce cash funds, workshops, and more, so do sign up at the bottom of this page: https://www.lambethlarder.org/
Take care everyone, love and solidarity, LMA xx
