About
Lewisham Commons is the campaign for a new, community-owned social centre (structured as a Public Common Partnership) in Lewisham.
A social centre is where a community gets to know itself. With the eviction of The Field, we lost a valuable space where we could get to know each other better - through food, through events, through conversation - so now we're working to set up a new, long-term social centre in the area. This starts with acquiring our own self-managed building, from which any profits will get reinvested into other community-led development projects.
Through the Public Common Partnership model, we want to shift power and resources out of the hands of private developers and into the hands of the community. The long term goal is to bring more and more of the borough into common ownership and reverse the decline of social and cultural spaces.
Any donations we receive will go exclusively towards campaign costs, such as printing, venue hire, registration fees, community meal ingredients etc.
Whilst we work towards accessing larger funding and setting up a bank account, we are asking for your financial support to help us get the project off the ground. If you're waged, our suggestion would be to donate one hour’s wage per month, but whatever you can afford we will always be grateful.
